Port Aransas Garden Club--Who are we?

In 1964 a small group of Port A citizens each with an interest in gardening and beautification came together and formed the PAGC. Initially, they met monthly in homes of various members to toss around ideas of how they could help the community by cleaning up yards and walkways, plant more gardens and help the overall environment on this island PA-radise.
From painting trash cans to plant swaps came Palm trees at the Royal Palm Cemetery; and the Red and Black Ball helped buy the first playground equipment at Roberts Point Park. Then the idea of a Home Tour was born … from a trolly car filled with ladies and gents viewing PA homes the tour grew becoming the major fundraiser for the PAGC. Shortly after, with the City’s permission the walkway at the Leonabelle Turnbull Birding Center was landscaped, and PAGC received a Naturescape certificate from the Texas Parks and Wildlife division. In 1997 a local shop owner offered to put on a fashion show as the March program for club members and it was a hit that produced our current “Fashions ‘n Flip-Flops” style show held each March. In the early 2000’s we started working more closely with Olsen Elementary School in the Reading Garden and the program for the Kindergarten and First-graders veggie and herb gardens came to fruition. In 2011 the club became a 501©3 organization which garnered greater support from the community as we had landscaped the Community Center and Museum House grounds.
We make donations each spring to various other 501(c)3 organizations and groups in Port A and continue to help fund projects at various city properties.
We thank the citizens of Port Aransas, our business owners and you for your continued support in our work to help beautify, educate, and help our community as we work to keep our slice of PA-radise healthy and beautiful for future generations.
